angels and demons tour Rome

The Tour

Join us as we explore the sites made famous in Dan Brown's best-selling Angels and Demons novel. We weave a trail that across modern Rome following the “Path of Illumination” to discover the Illuminati’s alleged four altars of science.  Satisfying our curiosities by seeing what the sites we read about are really like, our quest takes us into chapels and through crypts, around basilicas and across piazzas, following Dan’s Brown’s track of intrigue to the four locations in Rome and the Vatican City State where the novel’s key events take place: (1) The famous Chigi Chapel at Santa Maria del Popolo, to the site of the earth murder; (2) The exquisite Cornaro Chapel at the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, where the fire murder occurred; (3) The Fountain of Four Rivers at Piazza Navona where the water murder occurred; (4) The West Ponente at Piazza San Pietro, to the location of the air murder.

Dan Brown's Angels and Demons book cover picture on ItalyWithUsAt these sites we will discover Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s spectacular masterpieces such as the Habakkuk and Angel in the Chigi Chapel, the Ecstasy of St Teresa in the Cornaro Chapel, the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona, and the grandiose baroque masterpiece of Piazza San Pietro at the Vatican City.

As well as following the Angels and Demons trail of ancient signs and symbols we will unravel the clues of the novel’s mystery hidden in some of Rome’s other most fascinating monuments such as the Pantheon, the Collegio Romano -- seat of the Roman Inquisition, and the famous Castel Sant’Angelo.  Since all the locations and artworks in the novel are factual and can be seen today, this itinerary will offer an authentic visit to each of these sites.  We will also look at the intriguing iconography of Brown’s novel, the nature of religious procedures at the Vatican, and related eschatological imagery and meaning.

Your guide will be a scholar in Roman and Church history, and grounded in the stylistic elements of Brown’s novel.  He or she will share with you historical information about the existence of secret societies such as the Illuminati, the nature of the Vatican City State and its procedures, and the overall framework of the Roman Catholic Church, helping to separate fact from fiction.

Along with the “Angels and Demons” limelight, this tour also looks at some of Rome’s other mysterious presences, the lemures, whose accounts are embedded in the city’s very own history and traditions.
